Strause told Strause her mother was experiencing car troubles and she pulled into the station. While waiting at the car station, she went into pre-labor, and the attendant at the car genuinely helped her to reach an emergency room. Strause was born in hospital. Her mother, who was half Japanese/half Spanish was divorced before she knew she was expecting. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause had to live in a tent throughout middle school, which meant she was absent for the entire academic year. Strause described her experience of washing her hair in the river and hiding from her peers and how she was dependent on food stamps. The parents of Strause were struggling with addiction and mental illness. Strause was 10 years old when she became a member of the Worldwide Church of God. Strause describes Strause’s mother as independent and self-righteous.
